Chateau de Massillan

Chateau de Massillan

Entering the Chateau de Massillan a 16th-century Provencal castle near Orange and Avignon youd expect to find lots of chintz, dainty wallpaper, maybe even dried bouquets hanging from the rafters. Youd be wrong.Thats because proprietors Birgit Israel and Peter Wylly, who also own London-based Babylon Design Ltd, have created an outstanding luxury hotel that serves as an unexpected showcase for unique pieces from their interior design company. With the chateaus original architectural features as a backdrop, the public spaces feature an eclectic mix of avant-garde lighting, classy 50s and 60s-era furniture and reupholstered antiques. Picture James Bond meets Henry II and you get the idea (that shouldnt be too hard, as the chateaus first owner was the kings mistress).Twelve guest rooms are decorated in the same fashion and feature spacious modern bathrooms with specially-designed limestone sinks, free-standing bathtubs and super-premium amenities. All boast views of the surrounding 24-acre parkland. The restaurant is overseen by chef and co-owner Marc Koenemund, whose inspired French/international cuisine changes with the season and is based on regional ingredients (some from the hotels own herb and vegetable garden). Fittingly, the extensive wine list features many from the nearby vineyards of the Cotes du Rhone. The Chateau makes a good starting point for visiting those vineyards, as well as historical sites such as the Pont du Gard and Avignons Palace du Papes.
